A Sack of Songs

I wanted to make some things for in our prayer room here.  So this is one of the sacks that sits on the shelf and we use it to build our circle some Sundays as well.   I water colored images to represent some of our favorite songs and it has been fun to add songs as the weeks go by.  Sometimes we lay them out and choose, but often little hands reach into the sack and pick a song at random, which we sing until another is chosen (mostly before we finished the first one.)

So far we have Twinkle, Twinkle, The B-I-B-L-E, Deep and Wide, We have a King who Rides a Donkey, Jesus Loves Me, Jesus Loves the Little Children, God's Love is Like a Circle, The Lord is my Shepherd, The Fruit of the Spirit Song, and Silver and Gold have I None.

What are some of your favorite songs to sing with preschoolers?  I'd love to keep adding to our sack.

Every night at bedtime, after prayers, we sing Nothing But the Blood of Jesus, and It Is Well. Kian's favorite right now is Blessed Be The Name of The LORD, so sometimes we'll sing a verse of that. But the first two we've sang every night for years. We also sing a made up I Love You song, which basically sings about our love for each child and we fill in their name in turn. I like the thought that every night we sing about our love for them, Christ's love for us in that he shed His blood for us, and how with Christ, all is well. I hope they remember that as they grow.

"If I were a Butterfly" is quickly becoming a favorite!

There are so many fun songs. My favorite are the ones for which we have beautifully illustrated picture books (which of course is not neccessary, especially when you are doing your sack of songs, but I love looking at the visual imagery with my girls): It's a Small World (Liliana's favorite right now), Over the Rainbow, My Favorite Things, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Spier's Star Spangled Banner, Books with Hole's Old MacDonald and This Old Man and There Was an Old Lady, Caroline Church's The More We Get Together and You are My Sunshine.

Specifically Bible songs, we also like The Wise Man and Foolish Man, Jesus wants me for a sunbeam, Zacchaeus, and Climb up Sunshine Mountain.

And of course, each night before bed, we sing Goodnight Emily, just like Dad and your family sang to you, only I substitute my girls' names into it. I love for them to be reminded that if they wake up "in the middle of the night, just remember God is watching you and everything's alright!" Ah there are so many fun songs. And I love having sing-a-longs with my nieces and nephews so I can hardly wait until you come home!

These are all great suggestions. Certainly a few of our favorites among them and some new ones for us to learn too. Thanks for the thoughts!

Oh, and Laura, I sing Isaac "Goodnight Emily" - singing goodnight Isaac - every night as I did with the other boys when they were tiny too. I also love the line "If every you should wake up in the middle of the night, remember God is watching you and everything is all right."
