In My Kitchen

: It's October. That means fall is officially here and we've been getting ready with pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin chocolate brownies!, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cream cheese filling, and pumpkin seeds this week. More puree in the freezer and so many more favorite pumpkin treats (pumpkin roll, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin bagels...)

:I have made the same dressing (or a variation of it) for the past four years. A basic balsamic with a bit of yogurt to make it creamy and the yogurt keeps the dressing mixed so you aren't trying to shake and pour at the same time.

But after my birthday ceasar salad I decided that I needed to branch out and I tried the low-fat ranch dressing recipe from the Moosewood Cookbook (I do use other cookbooks in case you are wondering. They just don't get blogged about nearly as much). I don't usually like ranch dressing as it is so thick, but this dressing was based on a cup of buttermilk and I used fresh onion grated instead of flakes. It was so yummy and wasn't balsamic (we love my balsamic dressing, but Jim was definitely excited to see a new dressing)!

: Real Coffee. We just ordered a crazy amount of coffee from Roast-n-Post . They roast the coffee and ship it the same day. After having lived in the northwestern US and Canada (south western Canada I guess) for four years any coffee you can buy in the grocery store here just doesn't cut it. They serve instant at our church coffee hour; the youth made lattes during coffee hour in Seattle.
:Back to the Basics. I love the whole grain bread from Feeding the Whole Family, but every now and then I need my mom's bread. The bread I grew up eating every week with butter and homemade strawberry freezer jam. (I do typically substitute a couple cups of whole wheat flour.)

What's coming out of your kitchen?

Cake for Cameron's 2nd birthday (yet to be blogged!) - one chocolate and one lemon. The lemon sounded so good, but just wasn't. Oh, well.

Apple pie! We bought apples from an orchard near us, and my mom made her grandmother's pie crust recipe. Traditions!

Pumpkin muffins! One batch with maple icing, and one with chocolate chips. We also have a houseful of pumpkins, so the pureeing will begin shortly. :-)

Oh, yummy pumpkins! I wish we could get real pie and sweet pumpkins here. Pumpkin goods aren't the same with the pumpkins here!
